Wellness Wednesday: The Micro-mineral That Does It All

Today, we're diving into a tiny but mighty mineral that is essential for your body's daily operation: Zinc.

Though it's only required in small amounts (a micro-mineral), Zinc is a cofactor in over 100 enzymatic reactions. It is literally the catalyst for countless processes, and without enough of it, things start to slow down. The unfortunate truth is that many people—especially the elderly—are at risk of deficiency.

Why Your Body Craves Zinc

I recommend Zinc to my clients because it supports the pillars of good health:

  • Immune Defense: Zinc is a powerful immune booster, essential for mounting a proper defense.

  • Hormone & Metabolism Support: It is a vital component of many hormones and helps your body efficiently break down and metabolize proteins and carbohydrates.

  • Blood Sugar Balance: It plays a key role in balancing blood sugar and even decreases your body's requirement for insulin.
  •
  • Whole-Body Health: Zinc is necessary for forming healthy bones and skin, fights inflammation, and crucial for the optimal absorption of Vitamins A and D.

When you're deficient, you might notice subtle signs like fatigue, brittle nails, a decreased ability to taste or smell, or sleep disturbances.

Quality and Absorption Matter

You can find high amounts of Zinc in foods like fresh oysters, beef, lamb, pecans, and spices like ginger and thyme. However, if you are supplementing, quality is everything!

Make sure you are choosing one of the two forms that are best absorbed by your body: zinc picolinate or zinc citrate. You want to steer clear of zinc sulfate, which is poorly absorbed and often causes stomach upset.

Pro-Tip: Zinc can interfere with the absorption of other minerals (like calcium, copper, and iron), so try to take it at a different time than those supplements.

Wellness Wednesday: Let's Rethink the 10,000 Step Rule November 5, 2025 You've probably heard (or even obsessed over!) the 10,000 steps a day philosophy. But have you ever wondered where that number came from? Here’s a little history: The concept originated in Japan around the time of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, as fitness awareness grew. A company began selling a pedometer named Manpo-kei, which literally translates to "10,000 steps." It was a great marketing tool, and the idea quickly caught on globally. My Step-by-Step Approach to Movement Here’s the good news: You are not failing if you don't hit 10,000 steps! Recent science shows that you can gain significant health benefits without reaching that original marketing goal. A study this year in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that walking just shy of 4,000 steps a day (around 2 miles) can significantly reduce your risk of dying from any cause. Wow! The real key? You were born to move. Instead of striving for an overwhelming number, let's embrace "exercise snacks" —small, doable bursts of movement throughout your day. 1,000 steps takes about 10 minutes. The goal of 4,000 steps takes about 40 minutes of total walking. You can easily break this up: Maybe 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes before lunch, and 20 minutes after dinner. It adds up! Do what you can today, and strive for incremental improvements tomorrow. Ready to find other sustainable strategies that fit your lifestyle? Your Weekly Wellness Wednesday September 23, 2025 Have you ever wondered why some vitamins need to be taken with food, while others don't? Today, let's talk about the key difference between fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins, and why understanding this is so important for your health. Vitamins, which are essential for your growth and nutrition, fall into two main categories: Fat-Soluble Vitamins These vitamins—A, D, E, and K—are stored in your body, sometimes for long periods. Because of this, they should always be taken with food to ensure proper absorption. While they're crucial for your health, taking too much can lead to toxicity, so it's important to be mindful of your intake. Water-Soluble Vitamins These vitamins, which include your B-complex and Vitamin C, are not stored in the body. Instead, they are flushed out through urination on the same day you ingest them. This is why it's often a good idea to take water-soluble vitamins twice a day to get the maximum benefit, as your body uses them quickly. A Wiser Approach to Supplements When it comes to your health, quality matters. The effectiveness of any supplement depends on its form, purity, and bioavailability —which is your body's ability to actually use it. We'll dive into this more in future newsletters. In the meantime, you can explore the high-quality, science-backed supplements I personally recommend. I’ve carefully vetted these products to ensure they meet the highest standards, so you can be confident that you’re getting the most from every dose.
