Wellness Wednesday: Empty Your Rain Barrel with These Simple Home Swaps 💜🌿

May 27, 2026

With the holiday weekend behind us and summer officially on the horizon, many of us are doing a bit of seasonal cleaning. But while we’re busy scrubbing floors and clearing out closets, there’s an invisible clutter we need to talk about: Environmental Toxins.

In the DESTRESS Protocol, T stands for Toxins. I often talk to my clients about the "Rain Barrel Effect." Every day, our bodies absorb toxins from the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the products we use. Eventually, the barrel overflows, showing up as brain fog, skin issues, sluggish metabolism, or hormone disruption.

The good news? You have immense control over the environment inside your own walls. Here are 4 simple, high-impact kitchen and home swaps to start emptying your rain barrel today.

The Kitchen Upgrades

1. Ditch the Scratched Non-Stick for Cast Iron or Stainless Steel

Older non-stick pans coated with PFAS (forever chemicals) can leach toxins into your food, especially when heated or scratched.

  • The Swap: Transition to cast iron, stainless steel, or 100% ceramic cookware. If you love the convenience of non-stick, look for modern, ceramic-based non-toxic brands.

2. Swap Plastics and Tupperware for Glass

Even "BPA-free" plastics can leach hormone-disrupting chemicals into your food, particularly when microwaved or washed in hot water.

  • The Swap: As your plastic containers wear out, replace them with glass or stainless steel alternatives. Bonus: They last forever and keep your food tasting fresher!

The Living Space Upgrades

3. Swap Synthetic Fragrances for Clean Air

Plug-in air fresheners, aerosol sprays, and conventional paraffin candles are often packed with phthalates—chemicals used to make scents last longer that can wreak havoc on your thyroid and hormones.

  • The Swap: Switch to a high-quality essential oil diffuser or 100% beeswax/soy candles scented only with pure essential oils. Better yet, let the sunshine in and open those windows!

4. Upgrade Your Dish & Laundry Soap

Your skin is your largest organ; whatever touches it absorbs into your bloodstream. Conventional laundry detergents and dish soaps often contain synthetic dyes and heavy fragrances.

  • The Swap: Look for "unscented" or plant-based formulations. A great rule of thumb is to check your brands on the Environmental Working Group (EWG) app to see how they score.

Support Your Body's Natural Detox

While you work on lowering the toxins coming into your home, you can support your body's internal plumbing to flush out what's already there.

  • Daily Liver Support: Your liver works 24/7 to empty toxins from your body. To give it the foundational nutrients it needs to process daily toxic loads, check out my curated recommendations on my Wellness Shop Page.
  • Lower the Internal Stress: Physical toxins trigger an emotional stress response in the body (and vice versa). Keep your nervous system calm and resilient with the Sleep & Stress Support formula.

Remember, you don't have to change everything overnight. Just pick one swap this week. Every small change drills a little hole in the bottom of that rain barrel!

August 5, 2026 Over the last few weeks, we’ve covered a lot of ground in our Hydration & Vitality series. We’ve looked at why waiting until you're thirsty is a trap, why water needs an electrolyte partner, and how to fuel your movement before, during, and after a workout. Today, we are wrapping up this series by looking at the invisible side of the equation: the hidden daily habits that quietly drain your hydration levels without you even realizing it. You might be drinking your 64 ounces of water and mixing in your electrolytes, but if certain everyday habits are working against you, you could still be running on low power. The Three "Hydration Thieves" Without realizing it, many of us engage in daily routines that act like a sieve for our body's fluid and mineral balance: The Over-Caffeinated Loop: We all love our morning coffee or afternoon pick-me-up. But caffeine is a mild diuretic, and when consumed without matching it glass-for-glass with water—plus electrolytes—it pulls fluid right back out of your cells. You feel wired, but your cellular engine is actually drying out. The Indoor Climate Trap: Whether you're blasting the air conditioning in the summer heat or sitting in heavy indoor heating, climate-controlled air sucks moisture right through your skin and breath. We often forget to drink when we aren't sweating outdoors, but indoor air is surprisingly dehydrating. The Hidden Sugar & Processed Carb Overload: High-sugar foods and heavily processed snacks draw water out of your tissues and into your digestive tract to help process the glucose spike. That post-lunch fatigue isn't just a carb crash—it's often acute cellular dehydration. The "Step-by-Step" Action You don’t have to give up your favorite coffee or hide from the air conditioning to stay healthy. It’s all about a simple compensatory rhythm: The 1-to-1 Rule: For every cup of coffee or caffeinated tea you enjoy, match it with a full glass of water. The Environment Check: If you work in an air-conditioned office or home, keep a visual cue—like a marked water bottle—on your desk to remind you that indoor air counts as a dehydrator. Audit Your Afternoon Slump: Next time you feel that 3:00 PM brain fog hitting, reach for a glass of electrolyte water before you reach for a sugary snack or a third cup of coffee.
